NEW Videos. New Sponsor. New Books.
Same Old Coronavirus. RIP Mr Finkle. Remember The Alamo!

This is a Video Frame Grab (VFG) from my latest video FROZEN WIND. It's all from that 24 hour swell we had last week. I shot it in 4K so the frame grabs are pretty good. The video is posted down in the video section. It was cold that day. As in very cold. In fact, I was cold for a good 48 hours after. But I got some dramatic visuals. All the riders were pulling out all the stops that day. Which is typical with surfers when there's cameras on the beach aiming at them out in the line-up.

This VFG is of Mikey Evans. I only shot three of his waves in this latest edit but each one is pretty damn good. Like this one. He is flying inside that barrel. Did he make it out? Well, you'll have to watch the video to find out. Ironically Mikey is featured in the video I posted last week that was made by Brian Nevins. MIKEL is a 5 minute edit that I am calling the video of the year. Brian did a great job on that edit. Like I said, it's down in the video section. So after watching FROZEN WIND you should watch MIKEL.

This is a VFG of Becca Speak from the FROZEN WIND edit. I love this stance. When I first saw the clip it reminded me of a surfer from the 70's who was famous for his super stylish soul stances. Shaun Tomson is one of my favorite surfers of all time. So whenever Becca dropped into this wave and did this stylish bottom turn, I knew I had to find that pic of Shaun Tomson and post it next to Becca. Here it is. As you can all plainly see, it is very similar.

The only difference is of course, Shaun is in Hawaii wearing just a pair of trunks in 70 plus degree water temps, and Becca is in New England wearing a full winter's wetsuit in 38 degree water temperature. Any way, she got a lot of likes and comments when I posted this on social media.

The soundtrack to this latest video FROZEN WIND is by JELLY JAM. You can buy their music online at AMAZON. The lead singer and main songwriter of Jelly Jam is Ty Tabor. You've heard me mention him before. I love his work both in JELLY JAM and his main band KING'S X. Just a super nice guy with a vault of talent. KING'S X is in the TOP 3 Favorite bands of mine. It's true.

If I had to rate my top 3 favorite bands it would go like this:
1. THE BEATLES
2. JIMI HENDRIX
3. KING'S X

The music makes the video. "Music rides on waves of sound."

Welcome SALTY PAWS from Hampton, NH.

"We’re Abbie and Erin, the co-founders of Salty Paws, Seacoast NH's Premier Dog Walking and Pet Sitting Service. After getting a dog (Charlie) of our own in 2018 we quickly realized that he needed much more exercise than a few daily walks. As young working professionals, it was hard to give him the physical, mental, and social stimulation that he needed and deserved. #GUILT
We searched the Seacoast of NH for daily group dog walking services…with no such luck. After some serious brainstorming we decided the solution to our problem was to develop our own dog walking business right here in Hampton, NH, but with a twist; outdoor adventures for your dog.
We want to help our community by offering a dog walking and pet sitting service that caters to people like us. Busy humans who love their dogs. We want to be the service you look to when you need help to provide the best life possible for your dog.
Stay Salty!"

WELCOME TO Ralph's Pic Of The Week SALTY PAWS!

So one of the cool things about social media is they always remind you of past posts. This one came up the other day and I would have forgotten all about if not for their reminder. This is a photo of me at the Wall taken by my son Max. It was my first time surfing in 96 days after my knee injury. I have to admit, it put a smile on my face seeing this pic again. 8 years ago.

And speaking of reminders. It was exactly 184 years ago on March 6th, 1836 that the famous battle of the ALAMO happened. I grew up reading about Davey Crockett and watching the Disney series on him, and the classic John Wayne movie about the Alamo. My wife and I went to visit The Alamo in 2016. I felt like a little kid seeing that famous old historic landmark. Hell, we even stayed in the CROCKETT hotel named after Davey Crockett.

The Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. See those red lights in the upper right hand corner? That's the CROCKETT hotel. It's actually on the sacred ground where the actual battle took place. I thought it was sacrilegious being that close to where Davey and the other 183 defenders fell, but...I wouldn't have stayed in any other hotel. REMEMBER THE ALAMO!

This is Kevin "Doc" Grondin from 10 years ago. But it could have very well been taken just last week. Nobody has the lasting longevity of surfing on a shortboard better than Kevin.

Now for Some Local, National and International News
So it's down to two. Biden and Bernie. Although Tulsi Gabbard is still officially in the race, she does not have a snow ball's chance in hell to getting the nod to represent the democratic ticket to the White House. It's now between three old white geezers. All of them in their 70's. Now that's just messed up. All those potential young candidates have fallen by the wayside. It's just the three geezers now. Or as I called them last week. Presidential Geezers. Good luck America.

Here's our esteemed leader looking for the Coronavirus.

OK this is supposed to be funny. But it's really not. And as I write this, people are being exposed to this real threatening disease. Though the whole face mask thing is kind of a joke. Why? I have heard from a number of authorities that have said. "The face masks are not helpful." Don't waste your time and energy buying a face mask. They don't work and you look ridiculous. OK?

ESM (Eastern Surf Magazine) using a READY MAG format did the Best of Ralph's Pic. And while they couldn't possibly use everything thing I've ever done, they did manage to put up some 50 pics of mine, plus two videos. And I was truly humbled by their intro. Mez said some nice things about me. CLICK ON THE IMAGE ABOVE TO SEE THE WHOLE Spread.

I kept a daily BLOG when I surfed everyday during my
CATCH A WAVE FOR MOLLY. (Click On the Banner below)
Started on July 26, 2010 ENDED July 26, 2011.
A Wave a day for 365 consecutive days.

Yesterday- Johnny "Sav" Savastano and friend at
The
Wall on North Beach in Hampton, NH in 1980.

(Below) This is a photo that I have never seen before. Man it's so cool to find new photos of old friends. I don't ever recall John having a board under 9'.
But lo and behold here he is with a shortboard. Or rather a mini gun. Still, not something that Johnny Sav would be riding throughout his long surfing life.

Mikel from Brian Nevins on Vimeo.

"A visual hang with New Hampshire shaper and surfer Mikel Evans through the changing moods of a New England winter." Brian Nevins.

I'm sorry Brian, but this is more than a visual hang. This is a work of art. Both behind the lens and out in the water. I remember when Brian told me he was going to make the switch from stills to video, and was a bit apprehensive. I told him it's basically the same. The only difference is, you hold the trigger down longer. He already has the incredible eye for light, composition, and action. The creative talent is already there. To me? I saw the transition as being seamless. And I was right. This video proves it. As far as Mikey Evans? Again, the talent was already in place. Mikey Evans is the new Mikey Moran. Don't get me wrong, Moran is still King, but Mikey is that younger version of him. And this combination NEVINS & EVANS? It's a must see.
The music is a great score as well. Just watch the damn video and see and hear for yourselves. Well done all around gents.

For LOVE & WAVES from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

Happy Valentines Day! The trailer for the movie FOR LOVE and WAVES. The first ever movie about the unique relationship between couples who surf together. Featuring all local surf couples from New England. Ever since I can remember, surfers have always fantasized about finding a mate who you could share your love of surfing with. Don't get me wrong, I am perfectly happy and content with my wife who does not surf. But the thought of having a girlfriend/wife or boyfriend/husband who surfs is in a word intriguing. Though, I would imagine, that it's not at all what it seems to be on the surface. I mean, once you start having children, everything changes. Mom and dad can't both be out in the water when Timmy or little Suzie needs a diaper change. All of a sudden the fantasy becomes reality. So this documentary will look beyond the surface of couples who surf, and dig a little deeper into their world. Fascinating stuff. With an all original music soundtrack this latest SURF FREE OR DIE movie should turn some heads and hopefully turn more couples onto surfing. COMING SOON from Ralph's Pic and SFOD. For LOVE and WAVES. Watch in 1080

John (JT) Taylor 1979-1989 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

Back in 1978 JT and I lost a good friend to cancer. Joe Somogyi was a Vietnam vet and passed away after 6 months of being diagnosed. We needed a break from our sorrow. We needed to go surfing somewhere other then New Hampshire. JT picked out a small Island in the Caribbean called Tortola BVI. We went down there not knowing anything about the surf potential. But what we found was a magical place, where we met and became friends for life with two California surfers. Jeff Chamberlain and Sam George. The surf was great. The trip was a trip of a lifetime for the two of us. This all happened in January of 1979.

The footage you see here in Tortola was shot by me and JT. Back in the day, we took turns shooting each other.
It's old super 8mm and the camera work is spotty at best. The flickering and dirt and dust add to the ambiance of this old footage. Same with the NH footage. It's old. And we must of shown these old reel to reel flicks a million times back in the day.

The second half of this movie is of JT and friends surfing the ROCKS. I have so many old reels of movies, and I will eventually get them on disk and online. But suffice it to say, this is just scratching the surface of what I have. There's more , way more to come. *You can clearly see JT's powerful carves and bottom turns. And he had the BEST kick out ever!. The man was a powerful surfer. Just raw power. And his humor was just as raw.

But we all loved him. And we will all miss him terribly. Somehow, I think he is on some rare reef, maybe it's a left, or maybe it's a right. Or maybe it's like the ROCKS and has both. But I can see him now, taking off deep behind the boil, and just carving those deep gouges as only he could, and finishing each wave with that huge and powerful kick out. You were something JT. Nobody surfed like you.

Rest in Peace JT. We love you.

SALSWALLA from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

On January 26th, 2020 the NH and Mass coastlines were hit with a well groomed overhead swell with clean offshore winds. The air temps reached 50 degrees. That's crazy for this time of year in these parts. And the boys and the girls were out in full force. I missed the best of the best but managed to get a few good clips. The surfers are the usual suspects.
The soundtrack is by Jelly Jam.

TULSI and The Goofyfoots 1-1-20 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

On January 1st, 2020 Presidential Candidate TULSI Gabbard came to Hampton, NH to meet up with Dave Cropper owner of CINNAMON RAINBOWS and Lenny Nichols of the ESA-NNE to go Winter Surfing at the Wall at North Beach, NH. No other Candidate in the history of our country has ever gone surfing here before, let alone in the winter. This is a first. TULSI is the real deal. A War Veteran and a REAL Surfer. Anyone who has served our country in a war zone and who was willing to to paddle out into winter conditions here in New Hampshire has my respect and my vote.
TULSI has a "Soldier's Heart." She's the REAL DEAL.

NEW YEARS EVE 12-31-2019 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

The LAST Swell of 2019. There was size in the morning. But no sun to be found anywhere. I caught up with a handful of riders just to document the swell. The surfers that I know in this edit are: Jake Davidson, Perry Reynolds, Ian Dreher, Ryan Jackson, Mike Stanek, Alex Orestis, Artie Seaman, Skip Brunette, Johnny Reynolds and a few I couldn't ID. Music is by KOL.

DECEMBER ONE FIVE and ONE EIGHT TWENTYNINETEEN from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

This is two days in December. The 15th and the 18th. The 15th was as windy as I've ever seen it. And the 18th was just a nice day to be at the beach. I used BP again to move the visuals along. The surfers are: Kainalu Nichols, Max Fatello, Steve O'Hara, Jack Madden, Jon Kiskinis, Sarah Lang, and a few others I couldn't ID. Happy Holidays! *Watch in 1080 or better I shot this in 4K.

DECEMBER TO REMEMBER from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

From December 1st to December 3rd, 2019 we had a NON-STOP snow and wind event. We got hammered with over a foot of snow and it was the wet and heavy stuff. Like shoveling cement. That was down side, the good side was we got a really powerful overhead swell that had all the points and reefs firing on all cylinders. It was almost epic. I hate to use that phrase unless it's really EPIC quality. The boys were out in force and they all made the best of it. I chose my old friend and guitar God Robin Trower to provide the soundtrack. I shot this in 4K so adjust your video player accordingly. Hope you enjoy this DECEMBER TO REMEMBER! Happy Holidays Everyone!

BLACK FRIDAY from Ralph's Pic Of The Week on Vimeo.

November 29th, 2019. "Black Friday" was a day for the locals to score some insane deals on getting some empty barrels. And the boys did just that. From the young Kainalu Nichols to the seasoned vet Kevin Grondin. The local boys had their day of great bargains. Nobody lost on this day. It was a BLACK FRIDAY to remember. And I know, I won't soon forget it.
